The Ultrastructure of the Heart In Systole and Diastole
نویسندگان
چکیده
The relations between ultrastructure and function have been examined in the canine left ventricle under known hemodynamic conditions. Left ventricles of normal dogs were fixed acutely by rapid perfusions of the coronary arteries in either diastole or systole, and also following acute ventricular distension, or potentiation of contraction. Sarcomere lengths at the midwall of the left ventricle averaged 2.07 fi at end diastole and 1.81 \L at end systole, changes that are adequate to explain the degree of normal ventricular emptying. Following marked ventricular emptying induced by postextrasystolie potentiation, sarcomeres shortened to an average of 1.60 ft; with acute ventricular distension resulting from over-transfusion, average sarcomere length in diastole increased to 2.25 fi. In each instance, sarcomere lengths correlated with the changes in sarcomere length predicted from changes in the dimensions of a thick-walled sphere. The importance of dispersion of sarcomere length within a given layer of the ventricular wall was noted and its potential significance discussed. ADDITIONAL

متن کاملEvaluation of Cardiac Function in Patients with Thalassemia Intermedia
Abstract Background Thalassemia intermedia is a variety of beta thalassemia which shows clinical symptoms somewhere between asymptomatic carriers and thalassemia major. Cardiac dysfunctions due to chronic anemia and hemosiderosis are the major causes of death in these patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate cardiac function in these patients by echocardiography. Materials and Met...
متن کاملCorrelation between adolescent chronic emotional stress and incidence of adult cardiovascular disease in female rats
Objective(s): Association of adolescent emotional stress (ES) with the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) at older age was investigated. Materials and Methods: 21 female rats were divided into three groups of 7 each; ES, foot-shock, and control. Chronic ES was induced by exposing the rats to witness foot-shock of their neighboring...

Background: Cardiac dysfunction due to chronic anemia and hemosiderosis are the major causes of death among patients with thalassemia intermedia. This study was performed to compare the cardiac function in thalassemia intermedia patients with normal subjects by means of echocardiography. Materials and Methods: This was a case-control study performed on 22 patients affected by thalassemia int...
